Vancouver, BC, April 14, 2016 – The Société de développement économique de la Colombie-Britannique (SDÉ) announces the launch of the Pottery ÉCONOMUSÉE® at Mary Fox Pottery, joining four certified sites on Vancouver Island that are members of the ÉCONOMUSÉE® international brand.
The official launch was held today at the location of her workshop and gallery in historic downtown Ladysmith, B.C.
SDÉ was pleased to share the remarks by Minister of Agriculture, Normand Letnick, who said, “By joining the ÉCONOMUSÉE® network, Mary Fox Pottery has chosen to exhibit its passion and knowledge to both Canada and the world”. SDÉ was also honoured to welcome Aaron Stone, Mayor of Ladysmith and board member of Island Coastal Economic Trust, and Karen Cooling, Constituency Assistant to Sheila Malcolmson, MP, at the event.
Mary Fox is a prolific self-taught craftsperson who is passionate about sharing her creative energy and knowledge in her studio in historic downtown Ladysmith. Her amazing throwing skills and innovative glazing techniques are something to behold. There are all sorts of works in progress that are exciting to see and then there is her gallery! One like no other you have been in. Internationally acclaimed, it is full of treasures; distinctive functional ware, beautiful decorative chalices, vases and vessels in contemporary shapes that emerge like unearthed antiquities.
Her highly original artworks are exhibited and collected internationally. A new initiative, the Legacy Program, offers a unique learning experience with an artist-in- residency program for young potters. “The ÉCONOMUSÉE® network is growing – Mary Fox Pottery is the second of six new artisan workshops being launched in 2016 throughout the province. All these innovative and committed entrepreneurs support cultural tourism and sustainable economic development in their communities,” says Donald Cyr, Executive Director at SDÉ.
The ÉCONOMUSÉE® British Columbia Artisans at Work initiative promotes authentic and traditional artisan trades as viable economic opportunities that contribute to regional economic development, sustainable communities, agrifood and cultural tourism. The ÉCONOMUSÉE® trademark is an internationally recognized brand that represent a global network of artisans who open their workshops to the public.
For the creation of this site and the launch, we gratefully acknowledge the warm reception and support of the ÉCONOMUSÉE® Network Society and the financial contributions of the Government of Canada, the Ministry of Jobs, Tourism and Skills Training and Island Coastal Economic Trust.
